It is apparent that Archos is not the only
iPod contestant looking to take the high ground with feature sets way ahead of
what Apple is ready to launch. Toshibahas announced its Gigabeat V line of convenient
media players.
Dubbed the Toshiba Gigabeat MEV30K, this unit
takes its cues from the company's S line of players adding together a larger
3.5" TFT LCD display, a built-in speaker (one of the most reasonable
features in our opinion, notwithstanding the diffident sound excellence) and
longer battery life. The unit has a 30GB hard drive and supports a whole array
of audio and video codec including all of the present Microsoft formats. As
Toshiba will be building Microsoft's upcoming Zune player one speculates if
they will be given contact to the new codec MS will start with the Zune music
store.
The new Gigabeat MEV30K ships in October for
$399 and is available for pre-order on some sites with Amazon.
