This metal detector works fine in detecting a currency from 3cm away, while placing under the plastic box, cardboard or cloth failed to block the signal in any way. Using bigger metal detectors such as those found in airports should also increase the range of sensing, though detecting banknotes in such conditions would be trickier as several other sources could hinder with the signal. In a real condition the signal will be loud and some type of digital signal processing may be required. The results available are from a feasibility study, and a lot of advance work is wanted to make it practical.
Markus Kuhn, a computer scientist at the University of Cambridge, says this kind of finding is a "smart plan" but metal detectors may show a same response to other magnetic things found in luggage, such as laptop power cables. He suggests that adding equipment to the detectors to pick up other aspects of the signal such as its timing and would allow for more detailed analysis.
